One of my dear friends moved into an apartment furnished with antique furniture in the heart of historic Varna. There she found a bound book with a bunch of magazines from the 20's. For me the 1920's are some of the most exciting years in women's liberation and I was really excited when she let me snap some photos of my favorite magazine pages. I think these undergarments from October 1928 would look amazing even today!
If I ever had a bucket list, flying on a vintage biplane would've definitely made it on it. We (hubby and I) recently spent a few days at Hyde Park, NY in a lovely bed and breakfast called Journey Inn (thank you Julia for the recommendation!) and drove up to the Rhinebeck aerodrome for an air show. They have an amazing array of vintage planes from 1892 through the 20's, 30's, 40's etc. It seems incredible that some of these airplanes flew at all, given that they are constructed from wood and fabric (no high tech materials like fiberglass or kevlar there). Some of these needed two people to crank up the engine and one of them didn't even have a break, so as soon it hits the ground two people chase it to manually grab it and stop it. Another one of these was so difficult to fly that more pilots lost their lives learning how to fly it than actually flying it in combat during the war.
Well, we got really brave and bought ourselves a ride on one of these babies. For $65 two to four people can get on one of the biplanes with a mustached pilot sitting behind you, who flies it, and if I may say so totally made my day by performing some minor stunts encouraged by our loud screams. The total journey is about 15-20 minutes and the biplane flies above the Hudson valley, which on a sunny day is gorgeous and you can see miles and miles away. The whole "contraption" shakes and vibrates like crazy and makes so much loud noise you can barely hear yourself scream but it is so much fun I could've gone right back on it and taken another ride immediately after this one was done. Most of your chest, your shoulders and your head are completely exposed when you sit in it, and once you take off your shirts start flapping in the wind as if they want to fly away too. You feel somewhat vulnerable and completely exhilarated at the same time. Not to mention all you wear on your bead is a soft fabric hat and a air of goggles. In-between the wind beating your face, the shaking, the noise and the feeling that if you stand up you'll free-fall off the plane, you get so excited there's no comparison to anything else. In our world of overly-dramatized safety on every step of the way, I almost couldn't believe that they just let you on this little plane with just one belt across your lap. You could literally stand up and be gone flying on your own! Needless to say I loved every second of being on it! If you are not scared of heights this is the ride of a lifetime.
Their air-show is pretty amazing too. It's every Sat an Sunday at 2pm and they fly pretty much every functioning plane they own, and they have a lot of them. They do some simulated combat and a neat trick where a pilot drops a roll of toilet paper a few thousand feet in the air and then as it descends and unrolls the pilot keeps u-turning towards it and slicing the unrolling paper with it's wings. Two pilots do that one after the other to compete in who will do more cuts on the paper. It's so much fun to watch! You get to sit on the lawn, eat ice-cream, hotdogs or popcorn old style and just enjoy the whole show up in the sky. Now that was one amazing weekend!
I am a sucker for bright color and a cool composition. Tazmo or (Mohamed Gaff) satisfies both for me!

It's a bit gloomy and rainy in NYC this weekend, but I'd say it's perfect for watching movies and reading a fun book. If I had the choice I'd be relaxing in a swing and reading in the shade just like this fabulous lady! I am currently reading Bossypants by Tina Fay on my Kindle. What are you reading?
While I was in Austin I had the opportunity to visit the award winning McGarrah Jessee advertising agency office (during their rooftop music party of course)!
They have a gorgeous open space with chic modern furniture and an incredibly large art piece that took my breath away.
What I loved the most was the wall of photos of all the employees as you enter the offices. The catch is that they are all baby photos. How fun is that? Wouldn't you love to see your boss as a baby?
You know this guy was meant for a creative job!
And one of this agency's biggest clients is Shiner beer. You know by this photo that that was somehow meant to be!
