Project Lynus Quilts

I recently got introduced and contributed to a wonderful charity project called Project Lynus. In short Project Linus is comprised of hundreds of local chapters and thousands of volunteers across the United States. Each volunteer and local chapter all work together to provide warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers." Students and faculty from the Parsons The New School for Design got involved and created numerous blankets. Everyone pitched in to help cut, sew, decorate and finish the quilt. I love the variety of patterns.

Some of the work was done in the class of Genevieve Jezick. They assembled a quilt in 6 hours. The pattern was planned in 8" pieces. Some students prepared their squares at home, but many worked in class the day the quilt was made. All of the hand embroidery was created in class.

The students who worked on it signed up and attached to the inside a piece of muslin with all of their names!


Other students and fashion design faculty spent a day working on their own quilts from various fabrics. Here are a couple of their finished quilts.

Bombastic Plastix

Usually I go to a local fair to eat some grilled corn and a gyro and maybe dare to try a fried Oreo, but yesterday turned out to be a whole other experience. Apart from buying a top and a dress with yet another tie-dye print {I bought the first one last week at Woodstock} I found myself next to a booth with some wonderful brightly printed bags. After a minute I found myself talking to an avid promoter of sustainable production and a recycling guru. Forget the good causes... I actually really really liked the prints and colors. The bags are simple in shape and design but rich on fun! And the best part is they are 80% recycled plastic bags.

The company is Bombastic Plastix™ and the people behind it are Sam and Niluh. Based in Bali they have trash collectors that scour the island of Bali for plastic, then fuse it with a heat press to create the material and employ local seamstresses to create the colorful patterned bags and wallets.They use minimal silk screening for branding and no additional dyes for coloring the plastic itself.

Needless to say I had a really hard time choosing but end up with two of them: a big shopper tote with an adorable large dot print {see below} and a smaller one with minimalistic growing flowers print {not pictured here}
